ALTUS, Okla. – Murray State exploded for 32 points in the final quarter to break a third quarter tie and wrapped up the outright Region 2 women's basketball regular season title with an 85-69 win over Western Oklahoma State on the road Thursday night.
The Lady Aggies improved their record to 25-3 overall and finished league play with a 15-1 mark. Murray State will put a 10-game winning streak on the line next Thursday in Muskogee when they begin the Region 2 tournament as the top seed. Coach Nate Levine's squad will face eighth-seeded Northern Oklahoma-Enid at 6 p.m.
It was a nip-and-tuck affair for three periods as Murray State led 18-15 after one stanza but trailed 41-37 at the half. The Lady Aggies responded to knot the score at 53 through three periods before erupting in a massive final stanza in which they outscored the Lady Pioneers 32-16, spurred by 10 points from freshman
Mya Cotto and seven by
Ongolea Afu.
Cotto poured in a season-high 28 points to lead the offensive charge for the Lady Aggies. Afu pitched in 15 points with
Keshanti Gordon also reaching double figures with 13.
Taja Bennett and
Mireia Casas posted eight points apiece,
Jordyn McNeal scored seven,
Olivia Quapaw had four with
Elyssia Brooks contributing two points.
