Murray softball explodes early in Howard routs

BIG SANDY, Texas – Kennedy Lord drove in five runs in game one and Adison "Bubba" Lee chipped in five more in the second to spur the third-ranked Murray State Lady Aggies to a dominant sweep at Howard Junior College on Friday.

The Lady Aggies cruised to a 16-2 win in the opener and added a 12-0 blitzing in the nightcap to run their record to 6-0 on the season. They'll close out the west Texas road trip with a Noon Saturday doubleheader at Western Texas College.

Murray State wasted little time in setting the tone in the opening contest as Brylee Fanning blasted the first pitch of the game over the centerfield fence for a home run, fueling a seven-run uprising in the initial inning. In total, the Lady Aggies smacked three first inning long balls with Cady Ammons and Lord contributing three-run blasts.

Coach Aaron Mullens' squad tacked on three more runs in the third frame, five in the fourth and a single tally in the fifth before Howard ever got in the scoring column of the run rule victory.

Lord notched a second homer in the fourth inning for her second hit of the game. Ammons ended with three hits and drove in three while Bradi Harman also had three RBI on two hits. Fanning tallied two hits with Haili Igou, Lee, Kaylee Carter, Ryann Phillips and Karsyn Nye all adding one.

Bella Hardeman was the pitching benefactor, cruising through four scoreless frames for the victory, scattering three hits and striking out five. DrewAnn White added one inning of relief, yielding two unearned runs on two hits.

Game two was much of the same as Murray State raced to a 5-0 first inning edge, keyed by Lee's three-run homer to centerfield.

The Lady Aggies tacked on two more runs in the third and finished off the scoring with five in the fifth in capitalizing on Ammons' second double of the contest.

Ammons once again spurred the 11-hit onslaught with three hits with Lee, Carter and Fanning tossing in two each. Ammons and Fanning drove in a pair apiece. Harman and Avery Beauchamp posted one hit as well with Beauchamp knocking in three.

Carolyn Overton, Alanna Routt and Harman combined on a three-hit shutout in the pitching circle. Overton tossed the first three stanzas with Routt and Harman contributing one each. Harman struck out all three batters she faced.
