Lady Aggies squelch Redlands with late flurry

EL RENO, Okla. – Seemingly on the ropes with just under three minutes remaining, the Murray State Lady Aggies turned up the defensive heat and staved off the Redlands Community College upset bid for a 67-63 basketball road win on Monday night.

The Lady Aggies trailed 58-54 following five straight Redlands points but scored 13 of the next 15 points, capitalizing on five forced turnovers down the stretch as well as pivotal offensive rebounds from Jordyn McNeal and Olivia Quapaw.

It was Quapaw's driving layup with 2:09 remaining that ultimately put Murray State ahead to stay. The sophomore spark plug notched a pair of buckets in the final surge and Arissa Garcia was five for six at the free throw line as well to turn back the Lady Cougars.

With their seventh straight win, Murray State improved to 22-3 overall and 12-1 in Region 2 action while setting up a showdown Thursday at co-leader Northeastern Oklahoma A&M with major regular season league title implications on the line.

Murray State cashed in a pair of Keshanti Gordon three pointers for a 19-16 lead through one stanza and was able to maintain that margin to 32-28. Each time the Lady Aggies attempted to pull away however, Redlands would respond.

It was a 49-44 edge for the Lady Aggies through three periods when the hosts reeled off a 14-5 burst to open the fourth while bidding for the conference upset before Nate Levine's squad awoke just in time.

Quapaw and Mya Cotto pitched in 14 points apiece in leading the charge for Murray State. Gordon tallied 13 and Garcia also reached double digits with 11. McNeal tossed in seven points, Ongolea Afu had five and Mireia Casas scored three.
