TONKAWA, Okla. – After getting their legs under them following a lackluster first period, the Murray State Lady Aggies turned on the jets to run away for an 86-66 conference win at Northern Oklahoma-College Tonkawa and upped their winning streak to five straight Monday night.
The Lady Aggies only mustered 11 points in the opening stanza for a slim 11-9 advantage but more than doubled that scoring total in the second to claim a 35-29 halftime edge. A 33-point third stanza proved to be Murray State's second highest frame of the entire season while pulling away down the stretch.
Now 20-3 on the season and 10-1 league play, the Lady Aggies are slated to return home Thursday for a date with Northern Oklahoma College-Enid inside Beames Fieldhouse.
"Once we finally woke up and increased our activity, we got stops and it led to transition points," head coach Nate Levine said. "We have an extremely unselfish group that just wants to win and it's special when they really get going."
Murray State cashed in a balanced scoring assault that included five players in double figures, three of which came off the bench in
Taja Bennett (11 points),
Mireia Casas (11 points) and
Latai Charles (10 points) while totaling nine three pointers as a unit.
The Lady Aggies were clinging to a two-point edge beginning the second frame when the offense began clicking behind the one-two punch of
Olivia Quapaw and
Mya Cotto.
Cotto poured in nine more in the monster third quarter as Charles chipped in eight and
Ongolea Afu added six more in the flurry as they outscored the hosts 33-15 in the stanza.
Afu paced the offensive charge with 18 points as Cotto was close behind with 14. Quapaw turned in eight points,
Keshanti Gordon contributed seven,
Jordyn McNeal had five with
Arissa Garcia chipping in two.
