Murray State Sports Information
An aggressive offensive style controlled the game throughout, and eighth-rated Murray State remained unbeaten with a 3-0 soccer league shutout of Eastern Oklahoma State College Sunday in Tishomingo.
The Aggies run their season record to 7-0 as well as 5-0 in conference action and will have a well deserved week off before hosting Northeastern Oklahoma A&M on Sunday, September 22.
Murray State peppered the Eastern goal numerous times in the opening half before finally connecting for a goal on
Gui Alves' header off a corner kick from
Ryosuke Miyata with 14:18 left before intermission.
"Those early chances are the ones we talk about that we can't miss," head coach Alex Morais commented. "The guys discussed it at halftime that we can't miss those many scoring opportunities early against good opponents. You have to take advantage of those to put them away quickly."
Morais' club carried that 1-0 advantage to halftime before making a few adjustments and quickly took advantage after the break.
Just over four minutes into the second half,
Leo Aquino blasted through the first of two goals following a solid centering pass by
Shuto Ishikawa.
Ten minutes later Aquino found the back of the net again, booting home a loose ball deflection off an Eastern save of Miyata's shot attempt. That was set up by another nice crossing pass from
Gustavo Ursino.
With the 3-0 cushion, Murray State continued to control the possession but wasn't able to knock through any more goals against the Mountaineers.
"We finally have a week off to work on some things, rest and recover," Morais added. "There are still some things we have to continue working on. Just because we are undefeated doesn't mean we can become complacent. We have to keep improving game by game."
