MIDWEST CITY - Exploding for 12 runs in a monster fourth inning proved to be the catalyst for a season-high 23 runs as Murray State cruised to a 23-11 win over Rose State College in its final baseball non-conference game of the season.
The red-hot Aggies have now won eight of nine contests and extend their season-best winning streak to six heading into a pivotal weekend series with Carl Albert State College back at The Ranch in Tishomingo. Game one for that set is currently slated for 2 p.m. Friday.
In the wild slugfest, Murray State trailed 4-1 after three innings before finding its offensive spark in a massive way as they plated at least three tallies in four of the final five stanzas, taking the lead for good in the fourth.
Singles from
Brennan Morgan and
Ty Chaddrick got the ball rolling for the Aggie flurry before
Andrew Tinsley knocked in the first two with another single.
Ethan Rone posted an RBI single and
Trevin Pettigrew drove in three with a double to the centerfield fence.
Morgan returned to the plate for the second time in the inning and smashed a two-run homer to left.
Brady Richardson also contributed a triple to drive in another pair before the frame completed.
That was just the spark the Aggies needed for another three-run burst in the fifth, capitalizing on three free passes and a two RBI double from Morgan. Rone's three-run homer was the key blow in a three-run seventh and
Wilbert Espinal doubled to plate a pair in another three-run eighth.
Murray State pounded out 17 hits in the contest with Rone posting three of those, including a pair of home runs, while driving in five. Morgan tallied three hits as well with four RBI with Tinsley chipping in three hits and knocking in three.
Chaddrick and
Mason Shimkus tallied two hits and one RBI apiece as Espinal,
Gage Gilchrist, Pettigrew and Richardson concluding with one hit apiece.
Seven Aggies took the mound in the contest with southpaw
Jakob Holzer credited with the win, allowing a run on one hit in one inning of work.
Conner Smeltzer tossed two frames with
Kyle Holzer,
Kaleb Melvin,
Ryan Dugas,
Shepard Hall and Morgan all chipping in one stanza of relief.
