MUSKOGEE, Okla. – After suffering one of their two conference losses to Murray State, you knew top seeded Connors State College would not be looking past the Lady Aggies in the opening round of the Region 2 women's basketball tournament on Wednesday night.
The eighth-seed Lady Aggies still gave the tournament favorites all they wanted, matching them score for score in three of the four periods. A slight edge in the third period however, pushed Connors State to the lead it would not relinquish in an 89-82 inside Rougher Village.
Murray State ends Nate Levine's first season at the head coaching helm with a 15-13 overall record.
Each team pumped in identical 21-point totals in the first and second quarters as the game went to intermission dead even at 42.
Despite 10 points from freshman
Olivia Quapaw, the Lady Aggies went into a scoring lull for a slight stretch and that proved just enough for Connors State to pull out to a 64-57 advantage heading to the final stanza.
The Cowgirls finished with nine three pointers to only three for Murray State. Connors also sank 24 free throws to 17 for the Lady Aggies, but it was still a tight game right to the very end.
Four Lady Aggies reached double figures offensively with
Sosefina Langi pouring in 22 points to lead the attack. Quapaw and
Arissa Garcia tallied 16 apiece and
Ongolea Afu notched 15.
Murray State also got five points each from
