Murray State Sports Information
Defensive pressure took control early as Murray State scored 27 first half points off 17 turnovers on the way to a dominant 98-53 victory over Southwestern Christian College on Saturday afternoon inside Beames Fieldhouse.
Five players reached double figures offensively as the Lady Aggies improved to 6-1 on the season with the next outing coming next Saturday with a much-anticipated showdown at perennial power Grayson County College. In total, 11 Lady Aggies got in the scoring column for the well-balanced assault.
Murray State built a 27-12 advantage after one period and 49-31 at intermission before exploding for 33 points in a frantic third stanza that put it completely on ice against the visiting Lady Rams.
"We had seen they had started off the season a little rough but didn't want to take anybody for granted," head coach Nate Levine stated. "We stayed focused though. We wanted to execute and give other girls some opportunities. We had some players that don't usually get a ton of time to pick up some good minutes which was nice."
Arissa Garcia and
Mya Cotto pumped in 14 points apiece to spur the offensive charge for Lady Aggies.
Ongolea Afu,
Jordyn McNeal and
Taja Bennett also hit double digits as each tallied 12 points.
Brooklyn Weier was just off that mark in scoring nine,
Keshanti Gordon tossed in seven,
Latai Charles had six,
Mireia Casas notched five,
Olivia Quapaw contributed four and Autumn Sipes-Louie rounded things out with three.
The focus now shifts to the Grayson County showdown and matchup with former Murray State head coach Steve Lowe. The Lady Vikings were still undefeated going into the weekend.
"It's a big one," Levine added of next Saturday's showdown. "People around here know why it's big. It's our only game against them this season so it's important. We know a little bit of what to expect and they know we are pretty good this year. The fact that it's two really good teams matching up makes it even bigger."
