Murray women fight off Panola, improve to 5-1

After getting off to a fast start with 24 first quarter points, the Murray State Lady Aggies used their aggressive style to steadily pull away for a 76-63 triumph over Panola College Wednesday night at Beames Fieldhouse.

Coach Nate Levine's club improved to 5-1 on the season and will be at home once again Saturday against Southwestern Christian College for a 1 p.m. tipoff.

"We knew they were talented, physical and scrappy so we had to overcome that with execution on both ends," Levine stated. "Down the stretch we showed we were the more mature team and got the win."

Murray State rode a balanced assault to the 24-21 edge through a high-scoring first stanza. The second quarter was an offensive showcase for Mya Cotto as the sophomore spark plug pumped in 10 of the squad's 19 points en route to a 43-34 advantage at the break.

Ongolea Afu proved to be the catalyst out of intermission, notching eight points to spur the Lady Aggies to a double figure edge at 61-47 which they maintained most of the second half.

Afu tallied a game-high 21 points to spur four Murray State players in double figures with Cotto contributing 18, Arissa Garcia adding 16 and Olvia Quapaw chipping in 10.

The hosts also picked up six from Jordyn McNeal and five by Keshanti Gordon as they connected on 19 of 28 free throw attempts for the game.
