Ninth ranked Murray State got off to a blazing start and cruised through the second half for a 3-0 victory over visiting Rose State College Sunday afternoon, keeping the Aggies' unbeaten record intact.
Coach Alex Morais' squad improved to 12-0 overall and 9-0 league play. The Aggies will have an opportunity to wrap up the top seed in the Region 2 tournament and all-important opening round bye on Wednesday with their final regular season home outing against University of Arkansas Rich Mountain.
The Aggies wasted little time in jumping on the Raiders on Sunday, posting the game's first goal less than six minutes into the contest when
Ryosuke Miyata punched a left footed shot off a
Philipp Federer assist into the Raider goal.
Seven minutes later
Gustavo Ursino broke free and smacked a 25-yard unassisted goal into the right side of the net to make it a 2-0 advantage.
Gui Alves made it a three-score edge with just 1:53 left in the first half with a header into the left corner of the net following an assist pass by
Yosuke Shimizu.
With the comfortable cushion heading into the second half, Murray State put it in cruise control on the defensive while thwarting the Raiders five shots on goal as
Francisco Pinochet made a pair of saves en route to the shutout.
"The guys were exhausted in the second half after a busy week with three games," Morais admitted. "We had a very, very good start and put three goals in the back of the net. We always say the first 15 to 20 minutes are the most important in the game and did a great job out of the blocks. The second half we just managed the game with the lead. We didn't take many chances and didn't take many shots.
"I am proud of the effort and looking forward to Wednesday's home finale and a chance to wrap up the number one seed for the playoffs and first round bye. That's a huge advantage especially late in the season. We are going to miss this place (home field), but good teams have to perform everywhere you have to go and that's our goal."
