SHERMAN, Texas – Ninth-ranked Murray State set a new school record with its 15
th men's soccer win of the season Thursday evening, closing the regular season with a 7-1 win on the road at Austin College.
The Aggies wrapped up the slate with a 15-1 overall record and will begin Region 1 tournament play next Friday, November 1 in Enid, Oklahoma after receiving a bye in the opening round as the tournament's top seed.
It was a rapid-fire offensive approach for the Aggies as they peppered the Kangaroo goal with 22 shots on goal throughout the contest, racing to a 3-0 advantage in the opening 26 minutes of action.
Carlos Zapata found the back of the net with an unassisted tally at the 14-minute mark and
Alexis Lopez duplicated that feat just 23:30 into the game. Two and a half minutes later Lopez fed
Ryosuke Miyata for another goal to make it a commanding lead.
Austin College narrowed the gap on its only goal of the night 28:22 into the first half but the visitors added another score before halftime when Georginho De Fretes blasted a shot into the net following a
Matias Bauza assist. That made it 4-1 at intermission.
After 30 scoreless minutes to begin the second half, the Aggies closed with a flurry of goals, the first coming from Bauza after a
Luis Rodrigues assist in the 75
th minute.
Philipp Federer chipped in another score with just over seven minutes to play off a
Rafael Arcanjo feed.
Murray State added its final tally in the closing minute on a team goal that ended up in the Austin College net.
Miguel Fajardo was solid in goal once more for the Aggies, making a pair of saves with limited Kangaroo opportunities thanks to a stellar Murray State defensive effort once again.
"We are happy to have accomplished the most wins in a single season in school history, but we know that this is nothing compared to what this group can achieve this year," said head coach Alex Morais. "We want to stay humble and get back to work because now every game could be the finale. We are very excited to get the playoffs started next week."
