Murray State Sports Information
After an opening day tune up the Murray State offense really hit its stride on Wednesday with a doubleheader thumping of Garden City Community College at the Tishomingo diamond.
The Lady Aggies waltzed to a 10-1 win in game one before pounding their way to a 24-0 shellacking in the second contest to improve to 4-0 on the young season. They'll close out the early season homestand on Thursday with a 1 p.m. twinbill against Dodge City Community College.
A six-run first inning eruption put any doubt in the opener out the window as the Lady Aggies cruised the rest of the way.
Karsyn York and
Lexi Meadows each singled before a pair of walks forced in a run. Another bases loaded free pass with two outs extended the lead ahead of the big blow moments later on a
Courtney Gray grand slam to center field that made it 6-0.
Garden City scratched across a run in the second before two from Murray one frame later to answer when
Mattie Richardson beat out a bunt hit and rode home on York's first home run of the season.
The Aggies put the finishing touches on the run rule in the fifth as Meadows belted a double to right ahead of
Bradi Harman's game-ending two-run blast over the leftfield wall.
Gray was stellar in the pitching circle as well, twirling a two-hitter in five innings as she fanned eight and walked nobody. She also was the top hitter with a double, home run and four batted in. York finished with a pair of hits and two batted in while Meadows ended with two hits and scored twice.
Harman,
Shaylin Midgley and Richardson added one hit each.
In game two, Murray State sent 17 batters to the plate in the opening stanza to take a commanding 13-0 advantage and never looked back from there.
York,
Haili Igou and Midgley all tallied multiple hits in the first inning uprising, including a pair of doubles off the bat of Midgley as she drove in two.
Igou proved to be the hitting star of the game, smacking three hits while driving in a whopping six runs in the victory.
Murray State tacked on four more runs in the second stanza, fueled by a York double and Midgley triple. A seven-run third frame then capped the scoring as
Haeley Vasquez and
Brighton O'Connor came off the bench to belt their first home runs of the season.
York and Midgley also posted three hits with York scoring three times while driving in one and Midgley also scoring and knocking in three. Harman checked in with two hits and two RBI, Vasquez notched two hits with three batted in and
Emily Rogers contributed two hits and drove in one.
Rounding out the Lady Aggies' 23-hit total in just four innings were Meadows,
Bella Butler, Richardson,
Morgan Skold,
Kennedy Lord, O'Connor,
Jordan Hayes and
Maliya Chavez with one hit apiece.
Dara Hamlin tossed three scoreless frames, yielding three hits with six strikeouts to pick up the pitching victory.
Brooklyn Ellis added two frames of two-hit scoreless ball as well.
