A strong first half defensive effort propelled Murray State to a double digit lead and the Lady Aggies held on down the stretch to upset conference leading Connors State, 76-73, Saturday night inside Beames Fieldhouse.
Fueled by freshman
Sosefina Langi's 14 first half points, Murray State built a 21-11 edge after one period and extended that margin to 37-26 at intermission.
The visiting Cowgirls came alive after the break, narrowing the gap to 53-48 at the end of three stanzas before a wild fourth quarter in which
Arissa Garcia pumped in seven points to help the Lady Aggies keep Connors at bay as each team caught fire, combining for 48 points over the final 10 minutes.
Langi equaled her season-high with 23 points to lead the Murray State scoring. Garcia notched 12 and
Khalayah Willis reached double figures as well with 10 points.
Tierra Williams scored all eight of her points after intermission while
Ongolea Afu ended with six,
Cristina Laudan and
Olivia Quapaw tallied five apiece,
Hannah Pinney added four with
Mireia Casas rounding things out with three.
Improving to 10-5 overall and evening their league record at 2-2, the Lady Aggies will be on the road Monday for their next outing at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in Miami.
