Langford picked by Astros in MLB Draft

By Kevin Farr
Murray State Sports Information

For the first time in 38 years Murray State College can claim a Major League Baseball draft selection as sophomore Colby Langford was chosen by the Houston Astros in the 17th round of the Annual MLB Draft on Tuesday.

Langford, a lefty from Blanchard, was the ace of the Aggie pitching staff while making 16 starts and hurling 80 innings while posting a 9-4 record and 3.71 earned run average this spring. His 128 strikeouts led Division II pitchers nationally and he also yielded only a .201 batting average to opponents.

The southpaw has been signed to continue on collegiately at the University of Oklahoma since last fall, but could opt to sign professionally with the Astros instead.

Murray State's last MLB draft selection straight from the Tishomingo school was pitcher Kip Gross in 1985 as he was selected in the third round by the St. Louis Cardinals. Gross eventually made 73 appearances over a 10-year major league career. The school's lone other MLB selection was U.L. Washington in the late 1970s.
