Murray State Sports Information
It was business as usual for top-ranked Murray State on Saturday as the Lady Aggies built early leads in both games on the way to a second straight sweep of South Arkansas Community College.
With the four-game series triumph, the Lady Aggies remained unbeaten in conference play and ran their overall record to 46-0 on the season notching the 5-1 and 10-2 wins on Saturday. Coach Aaron Mullens' club will have a non-conference twinbill on Tuesday with Eastern Oklahoma State before closing out league action next weekend.
Sophomore
Alexa Hopkins had another stellar outing on the mound in the opening game as she fired all seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits and struck out five.
Scoring was fairly limited in game one as
Chesnie Hewitt had the only extra base hit of the contest with a double to lead off the game as Murray State strung together 11 singles.
Murray State quickly took control as Hewitt notched the leadoff single, stole third and came across on a sacrifice fly by K.J. Morgan.
Rayna Rock also delivered a two-run single to push the margin to 3-0.
Kenzie Tuck,
Brylea Russell and
Jadyn Hook each singled in the fifth inning to help plate another run. Morgan chipped in a hit in the sixth and came around to score after a South Ark error and
Abby Beck groundout.
Tuck topped the offensive effort with three hits as Hewitt and Hook contributed two apiece. Morgan,
Shallen Mershon, Rock, Russell and
Emma Damato all had one hit.
The Lady Aggies scored early and often in the second game as they ended it early on the run rule.
Hewitt belted a solo home run and Mershon had a two-run blast over the leftfield wall but put Murray State ahead 3-0. Russell and Hook began the second frame with singles with Damato getting the RBI. Mershon doubled and scored on a Beck hit for the 5-0 cushion.
A five-run fourth inning broke things wide open with plenty of cushion for Murray State to coast the rest of the way.
Hook singled and pinch runner
Mattie Richardson stole second and third before scoring on a South Ark error. Morgan singled in another before Mershon stepped to the plate and blasted a solo home run as well. Tuck also contributed a run-scoring double before the end of the uprising.
Ileana Lucio twirled four and one third innings, allowing two runs on three hits and struck out four. Hopkins got two outs to wrap things up, allowing no runs on one hit.
Mershon tallied three hits and drove in three to pace the offensive charge. Hook also had two hits with Hewitt, Morgan, Beck, Tuck and Russell each chipping in one.
