Murray State Sports Information
For the second straight day, Murray State's nationally second-ranked softball team rode tremendous pitching with a pair of shutouts as they swept McCook Community College by 9-0 and 10-0 counts while improving to 4-0.
Coach Aaron Mullens used virtually the same recipe in the pitching circle for the second day in a row with
Christina Clark and
Alexa Hopkins combining for a three-hit shutout in game one as they fanned seven and walked none.
The Lady Aggie offense meanwhile cashed in on the long ball as
Chesnie Hewitt, Mershon and
Abby Beck all blasted home runs. Beck's two-run smash in the first inning set the offensive wheels in motion.
Mershon chipped in a solo homer in the third frame before a six-run outburst in the fourth helped put the icing on the cake, stringing together seven hits.
Rayna Rock had two of those, including a double.
Emma Damato and K.J. Morgan also doubled in the stanza while Hewitt ripped an inside-the-park homer that plated three runs.
Morgan, Beck and Rock all picked up two hits with Beck also adding three runs batted in. Hewitt ended with three RBI as well despite getting only one hit.
Shallen Mershon,
Jadyn Hook,
Brylea Russell and Damato all tallied a hit.
In the second game it was another duplicate showing in the circle as
Ileana Lucio and Hopkins combined to allow only one hit and struck out seven with zero walks.
Murray State took all the suspense out of the game in the first inning as the Lady Aggies batted around on the way to five runs.
Morgan and Mershon each doubled to get things rolling and Russell also slapped a double before the frame was over. Morgan singled home another run in the second before a three-run roundtripper from Rock wrapped up the scoring.
The Lady Aggies got two hits apiece from Morgan and Russell. Mershon, Beck,
Kenzie Tuck, Rock and Hook all had one.
Next on the slate for Murray State is the THF Winter Blast at Grayson County College in Denison, Texas on Friday and Saturday.
