While the offensive numbers weren't quite as impressive as the opening day of the THF Winter Blast, the Murray State Lady Aggies turned back to pitching as the catalyst for another softball sweep on Saturday to stay unbeaten.
Coach Aaron Mullens' club blanked Dodge City by an 8-0 count and then smacked Lamar State College, 9-3, while improving its record to 8-0 on the season. They are slated to host Grayson County College for their next action on Tuesday.
In the Dodge City contest,
Ileana Lucio and
Alexa Hopkins combined for a one-hit shutout with each tossing three innings. They struck out nine and walked four in the victory.
Murray State's offense utilized another extra inning barrage with seven of its 12 hits going for extra bases in the game.
Chesnie Hewitt provided the only run the Lady Aggies would actually need by leading off the contest with a solo home to highlight a three-run first stanza.
Shallen Mershon,
Abby Beck and
Kenzie Tuck also strung together three straight doubles while batting around the order.
They were at it again one frame later, plating three more runs ignited by a K.J. Morgan triple off the centerfield wall. Beck also chipped in a two-run homer as the Lady Aggies built a commanding 6-0 cushion.
Emma Damato's home run in the sixth wrapped up the scoring and the run rule triumph.
Beck finished with two hits and four batted in with Hewitt, Morgan and
Jadyn Hook all adding two hits as well.
Murray State saw a five-run lead trimmed to 5-3 in the fifth frame against Lamar State, but notched the final four tallies of the contest to pull away for the triumph.
Rayna Rock's solo home run was one of four Lady Aggie runs in the fourth. They tacked on three more hits and a trio of free passes in the fifth to put up another four-run inning for plenty of breathing room.
Christina Clark worked four and two-thirds innings for the pitching win, yielding just one earned run on five hits with seven strikeouts. Hopkins then followed with two and one-third frames of scoreless and hitless relief for the save.
Rock fueled the offensive charge with three hits as Damato contributed two and two RBI while
Karsyn York had two hits as well and drove in one.
