After forcing a turnover with 22 seconds remaining, Murray State had its shot at a women's basketball upset of perennial power Grayson College on Saturday afternoon inside Beames Fieldhouse.
The Lady Aggies however missed a mid-range shot with 12 seconds to play and the visiting Lady Vikings finished things off at the free throw line for a 76-72 non-conference triumph. Grayson improves to 9-2 on the year while Murray State slips to 8-3 heading into the Christmas break.
Playing for the third time in four days, the Lady Aggies put together one of their best offensive efforts of the season, even carrying a 60-57 lead into the final stanza. Murray State hit a pair of three pointers in the fourth but the Lady Vikings asserted their size in the paint with 10 fourth quarter points around the basket to fuel the comeback.
Despite trailing 23-20 after one quarter and 43-41 at intermission,
Tierra Williams helped keep the Lady Aggies firmly in range by sinking five first half treys.
Arissa Garcia and
Mireia Casas each tallied five points in the third period to stake Murray State to the lead.
Williams finished with a season-best 20 points that included six three pointers. Garcia posted three triples to notch 14 and
Sosefina Langi pitched in 11 points. Casas and
Hannah Pinney nearly reached double figures as well, ending with nine apiece.
Ongolea Afu added six and
Olivia Quapaw scored three.
The Lady Aggies' next outing will be January 5 when they travel to National Park College to start the second semester slate.
