Facing their stiffest test of the season to date, the Murray State Lady Aggies provided a strong effort but second half pressure proved too much in a 57-48 road loss to perennial power Grayson County College on the road Thursday night.
The Lady Aggies trailed 16-14 after one stanza and narrowed the gap to 27-26 at intermission. That's when the Lady Vikings went to a full court press that caused multiple turnovers that Grayson cashed in for points in expanding the advantage to double figures.
Coach Nate Levine's club fought back within five points but could not get any closer in the final quarter while suffering their first loss of the year to slip to 4-1 on the season.
Freshman
Ongolea Afu was the only Lady Aggie to reach double figures, ending with 13 points.
Arissa Garcia and
Khalayah Willis pumped in seven apiece while
Tierra Williams,
Mireia Casas and
Sosefina Langi each notched five.
Hannah Pinney added four with
Olivia Quapaw rounding things out with two points.
"We didn't have any tough game experience until today and this was the first time we faced a press defense like that and we didn't execute very well at first," Levine commented. "We fought back though. We had a really good game plan and did what we wanted outside of the turnovers. Honestly, I'm really happy with the way we competed.
"Grayson was absolutely the best team we have faced in the regular season. We hung in there and now know that we belong. We just have to bring that level to every game. That's the challenge for us."
Murray State wraps up a four-game road swing and closes out the pre-Thanksgiving portion of the schedule on Saturday at Arkansas-Cossatot for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
