KINGSTON, Okla. – Despite having to move the final two games of their conference series with Carl Albert State College to the new turf of Kingston High School, the Murray State Aggies finished off the Region 2 sweep in dramatic fashion Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies scored in their final at bat on a
Brennan Morgan RBI double for an 8-7 victory in game one and followed up with a 7-4 triumph in the nightcap after plating seven runs in the sixth inning.
Murray State improved to 25-13 overall and 9-3 in league play as their winning streak grew to six in a row. Carl Albert slipped to 24-12 and 2-6 in conference action. The Aggies will return to The Ranch in Tishomingo for their next outing with University of Arkansas-Rich Mountain on Thursday at 1 p.m.
Coach
Sam Bjorling's squad scored at least once in every inning, including four home runs and three doubles in their 10 hits for the contest.
Junho Son homered to start the contest and set the tone and
Kaden Monkerud added a solo blast in the second frame.
Michael Barham smashed a two-run homer in the third that put the Aggies back in front in the back-and-forth affair.
Brady Taylor's solo roundtripper in the fifth stanza broke a 5-5 deadlock and an
Austin Haley RBI single one frame later gave Murray State a 7-5 edge heading to the final inning.
Carl Albert answered the call with a game-tying two-run blast of its own before Taylor and Morgan connected for back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the frame for the winning tally.
Haley, Taylor and Monkerud tossed in two hits each with one apiece coming from Son, Barham, Morgan and
Marlon Moore.
Haley worked the first four innings on the mound, yielding five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts, but it was
Jakob Holzer that was credited with the victory. He scattered two runs on three hits and fanned five in three stanzas.
The Aggie bats were silenced for seven of the eight frames in which they hit in game two, but that one inning proved to be the difference as they erupted for seven runs on five hits and a pair of walks.
Trailing 2-0, Morgan's two-run blast started the uprising with Haley's three-run homer capping the barrage.
That was enough offensive support for freshman
Carson Culbreath, who scattered nine hits but also struck out nine and walked none in six innings of work.
Kyndon Lovell,
Conner Smeltzer and
Ty Frakes combined for three innings of three-hit relief, allowing one run with four strikeouts. Frakes finished it off and earned the save.
Haley and Son each accounted for two hits with one each by Morgan,
Zach Makarewich,
Tanner Norman, Monkerud and Moore.
