Murray State Sports Information
After taking a 2-0 lead through four innings of the opener on Sunday, timely hits were in short supply for the Murray State Aggies as they dropped a baseball twinbill to Redlands Community College at The Ranch.
The Aggies fell 7-5 in the first contest and never led in game two while dropping a 10-3 decision that dropped their record to 31-18 overall and 13-7 in conference play. They'll have a pivotal league series with Northern Oklahoma College-Enid starting on Wednesday in Enid to close out the regular season.
Murray State appeared to be cruising in the opening contest, grabbing a 2-0 edge in the third frame with four straight singles from
Marlon Moore,
Junho Son,
Austin Haley and
Michael Barham while Haley was cruising through four frames on the mound. He ran into trouble in the fifth as Redlands scratched across three runs and then added three more in the sixth off reliever
Ty Frakes.
Coach
Sam Bjorling's club answered in the bottom of the frame, pushing in three of its own while cashing in a trio of walks and a Cougar error. The visitors tacked on another run in the seventh, which proved too much to overcome as they managed only a
Brady Taylor single in the bottom of the frame.
Son and Barham posted two hits apiece with Haley, Taylor, Monkerud and Moore each chipping in one.
Redlands claimed a 2-0 advantage in the third inning of the second contest and plated five more in the sixth that proved decisive. Murray State managed only single tallies in the fourth, sixth and eighth stanzas as the Aggies were outhit 11-7 in the contest.
Brennan Morgan had a solid outing with three hits and two RBI and Barham contributed a pair of doubles, but the only other Murray State hits were doubles scattered in from Haley and Moore.
Carson Culbreath tossed five solid frames, allowing four runs on five hits but was saddled with the mound loss as
Kyndon Lovell,
Jakob Holzer and
Conner Smeltzer also yielded at least one run each in relief.
