POTEAU, Okla. – Sophomore
Brennan Morgan smacked five hits, including two doubles and two homers, while driving in 10 runs as Murray State blasted its way to a Region 2 baseball sweep of Carl Albert State College on Wednesday afternoon.
Morgan drove in seven in the Aggies' opening 15-3 thumping of the Vikings and they followed up with a 14-1 triumph to improve to 23-13 overall and 7-3 in league play. The same two squads will square off at The Ranch in Tishomingo for another twinbill on Saturday.
Murray State erupted for 14 hits in just five innings of the opener, with half of those going for extra bases.
The Aggies set the tone for the day in the very first stanza when Morgan doubled to score a pair with one out. They erupted for six runs two frames later to break it wide open with
Brady Taylor smashing a two-run homer and
Junho Son adding a three-run bomb as well.
That offensive avalanche continued in the fourth inning as Morgan's second double of the game spurred a two-run uprising before putting it away on the run rule in the fifth with five more tallies, fueled by a Morgan grand slam over the leftfield fence.
In addition to Morgan's massive outing, the Aggies also got two hits each from Son,
Austin Haley,
Michael Barham, Zack Makarewich and
Tanner Norman.
Cash Kuiper cruised through five innings for the pitching triumph, scattering three runs on six hits to go along with six strikeouts and only one walk.
Game two was much the same as Murray State's offense got off and running early with a four-run opening frame explosion. Son, Morgan, Makarewich, Norman and
Kaden Monkerud all strung together singles.
After a Carl Albert run in the bottom of the inning, the Aggies responded with another five-run outburst in the third despite just one hit coming on a double by Monkerud coupled with seven free passes.
Barham tallied a three-run homer in the fourth and Morgan slapped a solo roundtripped one frame later.
The Aggies made the most of nine hits with Morgan and Monkerud chipping in two apiece. Son, Barham, Makarewich, Norman and
Marlon Moore ended with one each.
Tayte Dome went the distance on the mound, yielding just one run on four hits. He struck out seven and walked two.
