EUNICE, LA – A late rally came up short in Murray State's baseball upset bid at LSU-Eunice as the ninth-ranked Bengals finished off the series sweep with a 7-5 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Coach
Sam Bjorling's club fell to 12-7 on the season and will be back home at The Ranch for their next action on Friday against Vernon Junior College.
The hosts utilized their firepower to build a 7-1 advantage through four stanzas, but the Aggies got sensational relief pitching from
Jakob Holzer and
Ty Frakes to blank the Bengals on just two hits over the final four and two-third innings. Holzer struck out five.
Murray State capitalized on the stellar pitching out the bullpen, scoring twice in the seventh to narrow the gap.
Junho Son and
Brady Richardson each walked and came around to score on more clutch hitting from
Michael Barham, who delivered a two-out, two RBI single to right.
The Aggies put together a final flurry in the ninth inning, all of which came with two outs.
Brady Richardson doubled to right and came around to score on a following single from
Austin Haley. Barham was hit by a pitch and
Brady Taylor walked to load the bases.
Nick Vickery was then hit by a pitch to force in a run and move the tying runners into scoring position.
That's when the Bengals went to standout reliever Alex Dupuy, who struck out
Tanner Norman to end the game for the pitching save.
Haley and Taylor posted two hits apiece in the Aggies' six-hit offensive total. Richardson and Barham ended with one each.
