MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Hitting their first trio of three-point attempts, the Murray State Aggies got off to a blazing start in the Region 2 men's basketball tournament opener on Wednesday night in Muskogee.
That was one of a pair of Aggie offensive flurries, but there were far too many dry spells in between as they dropped a 67-64 decision to Western State College to end the season with a 20-10 overall record.
Consecutive treys by
RJ Chatman,
Elijah Tshibangu and
Rustin Coffey to open the game followed by a
Bol Agu bucket staked the Aggies to an 11-2 edge just over two minutes into the contest.
Following a Western timeout, the Aggies went cold with only two baskets over the next six minutes while missing seven straight from beyond the arc. Western rallied with a 19-4 scoring flurry to take command.
A Tshibangu trey narrowed the gap to two points but that's as close as it got the remainder of the half. His steal and layup in the final second made it a 33-28 Lady Aggie deficit at intermission.
Trailing 36-31 early in half two, Murray State caught fire as
Abeeng Agot, Coffey and Agu all tossed in four points during a 12-2 Lady Aggie burst. Agot's dunk capped the flurry and put Murray State in front 43-38.
The lead see-sawed back and forth the remainder of the second half with the Aggies claiming their final edge on an Agot trey with just over two minutes left. The Pioneers scored back-to-back buckets as Murray State only managed another Agot jumper with less than 30 seconds to play for its final points.
Agu topped four double figure scorers for the Aggies with 18 points with Agot contributing 14, as 13 of those came after intermission. Tshibangu got off to a quick start with 10 points before the half and ended with 13 while Coffey checked in with 10.
RJ Chatman tallied six and
Devon MacCollister scored three.
