Dominant pitching notched a pair of shutouts and fourth-ranked Murray State raced past Southern Arkansas University Tech to wrap up a Region 2 opening four-game softball sweep on Monday.
The Lady Aggies tallied an 8-0 run rule verdict in the opener as well at 18-0 in game two while throttling the Lady Rockets.
Now 25-1 on the season, Coach Aaron Mullens' squad will be back on the road for a six-game road swing through Arkansas which begins on Thursday at Arkansas State-Three Rivers.
Carolyn Overton got the pitching nod in the opener and went the distance for the Lady Aggies in the five-inning run rule affair. She scattered four hits, struck out six and walked only one batter.
It took a couple innings for the Murray State offense to get untracked, but once they did it was lights out for the visitors. The Lady Aggies broke a scoreless deadlock with four runs in the third stanza, the first two of which rode home on a
Ryann Phillips double to right.
Haili Igou added a triple and
Kaylee Carter chipped in a double before the frame was over.
The hosts erupted for two more tallies in the fourth thanks largely to doubles from
Avery Beauchamp and
Brylee Fanning.
Cady Ammons doubled to start the fifth inning and Carter immediately followed with a home run over the leftfield fence for the walk-off ending.
Carter and
Kennedy Lord were the lone Murray State players with more than one hit each as Fanning, Igou, Ammons, Beauchamp and Phillips all tallied one.
Game 2 was a trouncing from the get-go as the Lady Aggie totaled 14 hits and plated seven runs in each of the first two stanzas.
Harman doubled for the key blow in the first inning as Carter and Fanning also had hits while Murray State coasted in from there. Harman, Beauchamp and Fanning each had doubles to highlight the second inning uprising.
Murray State added four more in the third frame to completely put it on ice.
Fanning, Harman and Carter each tallied two hits and drove in three apiece.
Haili Igou also checked in with two hits. Beauchamp,
Karsyn Nye, Kendall Overton,
Lexi Meadows, Brightyn O'Connor and
Brynn Surmont all had one.
Isabella Hardeman tossed three stellar innings and was credited with the pitching win, scattering a pair of hits with eight stikeouts.
DrewAnn White and
Ava Boozer tallied one scoreless frame apiece in the circle.
