Murray baseball splits pair with Connors

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 By Kevin Farr
Murray State Sports Information

A 10-run first inning propelled the Murray State baseball team to a game one victory before the Aggies settled for a doubleheader split with powerhouse Connors State in the home opener on Saturday afternoon at The Ranch.

The Aggies made that early uprising stand up in the 10-3 victory but could only scratch across a single tally in the second contest as the Cowboys prevailed 7-1 to move the Murray State record to 3-4 on the year. They are slated to host Dawson Community College from Montana in a four-game series at 1 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, weather permitting.

Murray State's early run spree was aided greatly by five Connors State errors in the frame but they also picked up a pair of singles from Michael Barham, a double by Junho Son and single hits from Zach Makarewich, Jacob Knox and Marlon Moore while sending 14 batters to the plate. The Aggies only other hit in the seven-inning affair came on an Austin Haley single leading off the fourth stanza.

That offensive barrage was more than enough for Aggie pitching ace Cash Kuiper, who notched the victory in six innings of work, yielding two runs on three hits as well as striking out eight and walking four. Heath Graf allowed one unearned run and one hit in a single frame of relief.

Ironically, Murray State tallied more hits in the second game of the twinbill but pushed across one lone run. That tally came in the third inning when Barham doubled home Son who had walked with one out.

Connors meanwhile notched six unanswered runs while holding the Aggie bats silent over the final six frames of the nine-inning outing.

Moore, Haley and Barham each notched two hits with Makarewich and Brady Richardson tossing in one apiece.

Five Aggie pitchers saw action with Haley suffering the loss after yielding three runs (two earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks in four innings. Ty Frakes, Tayte Dome and Brennan Morgan all contributed one frame of scoreless relief work.
