Murray State Sports Information
Four Lady Aggie pitchers combined to allow just one hit and struck out 13 over 12 shutout as third-ranked Murray State blanked Northeast Community College from Nebraska in a doubleheader at Tishomingo Sunday afternoon.
Coach Aaron Mullens' troops were 10-0 victors in game one and then whitewashed the visiting Lady Hawks by a 6-0 count in the second contest to run their record to a perfect 16-0.
The Lady Aggies will be off until Friday when they travel to Branson, Missouri for a festival event and will meet second-rated Kirkwood Community College in a much-anticipated opener at 11:30 a.m. Kirkwood ended the Murray State season a year ago in the NJCAA World Series semifinals.
Hurlers
Alanna Routt and
Ava Boozer were in command from the start in the opening run rule, allowing only two base runners in the five inning affair while combining for the no hitter. Routt issued one walk in three and one-third stanzas while Boozer contributed an inning and two-third of relief and hit one batter.
Murray State wasted little time in taking control as the hosts plated eight runs in the first inning.
Cady Ammons drove in a pair with a single to get the Lady Aggies on the scoreboard just ahead of Adison "Bubba" Lee's two-run line drive homer over the rightfield fence.
Kennedy Lord and
Brylee Fanning also chipped in RBI doubles.
The Lady Aggies tacked on two more in the third on an Ammons two-run blast to rightfield that capped the scoring.
Ammons finished with a team-high three hits and drove in five. Fanning notched two hits and scored three times while Lee, Lord and
Brynn Surmont posted one hit apiece.
Game two was a bit tighter affair, going scoreless for three innings before the hosts finally broke through by pushing across four tallies in the bottom of the fourth – all of which came via the long ball.
Ammons and Lee belted solo home runs to start the frame and
Avery Beauchamp contributed a two-out blast that drove in a pair to make it 4-0.
Murray State iced the contest with a pair of runs in the sixth, the first of which came across on a
Kaylee Carter solo homer and the second on
Karsyn Nye's RBI single with two outs.
Routt fired the first two innings in the pitching circle, allowing one hit with four strikeouts, but
DrewAnn White picked up the victory in four frames of near perfect relief as she fanned six and walked one.
Carolyn Overton tossed in one frame of no-hit relief as well.
Four of the Lady Aggies' six hits left the ballpark with Surmont and Nye adding singles.
