Cady Ammons homered and doubled while driving in six runs in her college debuts Saturday to help spur the third-ranked Murray State Lady Aggies to an opening day softball sweep.
Coach Aaron Mullens' squad scored in all but one inning in which they hit on the day as they notched a 9-1 triumph over Coffeyville Community College before pounding Dodge City, 11-1, to wrap up the day's action.
The Lady Aggies will face the same two teams to close out the weekend home series on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.
In the opener, Murray State got off to a fast start with three runs in the first stanza against Coffeyville with a pair riding home on a Adison "Bubba" Lee sacrifice fly before Ammons went deep in her first collegiate at bat.
The hosts tallied one in the second, two in the third and fourth innings and another solo run in the sixth to finish the game with 12 hits.
Kaylee Carter led the hitting barrage with three singles while also adding two RBI. Lee doubled twice and drove in a pair as well with Ammons,
Brylee Fanning and
Haili Igou each posting two hits.
Murray State also got stellar pitching as four hurlers combined to yield just one run on seven hits, striking out seven and walking one.
Carolyn Overton got the bulk of the work with three innings, yielding the one run on five hits with
Alanna Routt,
Bradi Harman and
DrewAnn White all contributing one scoreless frame of relief.
The Lady Aggies ended any doubt in the second contest right out of the gate by pushing across five runs. Three of those rode home on an Ammons double after Murray State had loaded the bases with three free passes. Carter tripled home another run before scoring herself on a Dodge City error.
Two runs in the second, third and fourth innings put it away on the run rule for Murray State while Ammons paced the charge with two hits and four batted in. Igou and Harman pitched in two hits apiece while Fanning, Carter and
Avery Beauchamp all ended with one.
Bella Hardeman was the pitching benefactor, allowing one unearned run on five hits and fanned eight over four innings for the victory. Harman also struck out two in an inning of perfect relief.
