SPARTANBURG, SC – Following what turned into more than a nine-hour weather delay, the Murray State Lady Aggies advanced to the Final Four of the NJCAA Division II World Series with a 5-1 win over Johnson County, Kansas early Friday morning.
With the victory the Lady Aggies improved to 59-6 on the season and broke the school record for wins in a campaign in the process. They'll next meet second-ranked Copiah Lincoln Community College in another elimination matchup slated for approximately noon on Friday.
Coach Aaron Mullens' club bolted to a 2-0 lead over the seventh-ranked Lady Cavaliers with a pair of first inning tallies prior to the Thursday night delay.
Karsyn York and
Haili Igou each singled and came around to score after a
Shaylin Midgley double.
After play resumed with a runner on in the third stanza,
Bella Butler quickly doubled the advantage by blasting a two-run homer over the centerfield fence.
Johnson County got a run back in the bottom of the frame with a pair of two-out hits off of starting hurler
Courtney Grey but the Lady Cavaliers were turned back after that.
Each team continued to throw up scoreless frames until the seventh when Murray State tacked on an insurance tally in the top of the inning as
Bradi Harman doubled and scored on a Midgley single.
Harman then entered the pitching circle and fired a scoreless stanza, including a pair of strikeouts to end the game. Grey picked up the pitching victory, working six strong innings while yielding just the one run on six hits. She struck out six and walked two.
The Lady Aggies finished with nine hits as Midgley and
Kennedy Lord posted two apiece. York, Igou, Harman, Butler and
Mattie Richardson all had one.
