Aggie baseballers drop slugfest to Western

ALTUS, Okla – Murray State plated a season-high 17 runs but it still wasn't enough to keep up with host Western State College as the host Pioneers notched a wild 20-17 conference win on a windy afternoon on Friday.

The Aggies slipped to 18-17 and 4-11 in league play while Western bumped to 27-10 and 12-4 in conference. A 1 p.m. doubleheader will wrap up the series on Saturday.

There were runs in bunches for both teams with only one scoreless half frame for either team through five innings. That zero came in the fourth when the Aggies' Nathan Darden blanked the Pioneers on two hits.

Murray State held a 2-0 lead in the first, 5-4 in the second and 14-13 following solo home runs by Austin Haley and Wilbert Espinal in the fifth frame.

Western knotted the score with a run in the bottom of the fifth and neither team scored again until the eighth when the Pioneers exploded for six more tallies to fully take command.

The Aggies pushed across three runs thanks to a pair of walks and Ty Chaddrick single in the ninth but could never get the tying run to the plate.

Each club blasted six home runs as Espinal had two of those for Murray State. Haley, Andrew Tinsley, Brennan Morgan and Tristen Pettigrew contributed one apiece. Chaddrick and Tinsley also had doubles as eight of Murray State's 14 hits went for extra bases.

Morgan tallied three of the hits as Tinsley notched two while driving in five. Espinal had two hits and drove in four. Ethan Rone and Chaddrick each ended with two hits. Gage Gilchrist, Haley and Pettigrew had one apiece.
