Despite having to rally from early deficits in each game the third-ranked Murray State Lady Aggies caught fire late in notching 10-1 and 13-5 run rule win over Northern Arkansas College on Tuesday evening.
Murray State improved to 45-5 overall and 22-0 in conference play and will close the four-game league set with the Pioneers, who slipped to 9-36, on Wednesday with a 10 a.m. twinbill.
North Ark held a 1-0 edge after one inning and it was knotted at 1-1 in the fourth when the Lady Aggies erupted offensively by plating nine runs to escalate the run rule quickly.
Things started innocently enough with a
Courtney Grey but it snowballed quickly following a Pioneer error as
Mattie Richardson doubled and
Karsyn York tripled. Following a walk to
Kennedy Lord, Murray State duplicated the same feat with a
Bradi Harman double and
Haili Igou triple.
Grey contributed another hit with Bree Butler belting a two-run homer to centerfield in closing out the scoring spree. Lord also homered in the contest.
Harman fueled the offense with three hits as Grey chipped in two along with one hit apiece from York, Lord, Igou, Butler and Richardson.
Dara Hamlin notched the pitching victory, allowing one unearned run on two hits and struck out eight in four innings of work. Harman also fanned two in one stanza.
The deficit was even bigger in the nightcap as the Pioneers reeled off five runs in the second frame to break a scoreless tie.
Coach Aaron Mullens' squad found its offensive rhythm with three runs in the bottom of the inning before grabbing the lead for good with a five-run third. They notched another three in the fourth and two in the fifth to end it early.
The Lady Aggies made the most of just eight hits with Igou and
Shaylin Midgley posting two of those each, including a home run apiece. Harman tripled to drive in one while Lord and Butler each slapping doubles. Richardson drove in three with one hit.
Courtney Grey tossed two and one-third innings of scoreless, no-hit ball to pick up the pitching triumph, adding two strikeouts and one walk.
