A pair of eight-run innings by Eastern State College broke the nine-game winning streak of fourth-ranked Murray State to a halt on Tuesday but the Lady Aggies bounced back to notch a softball non-conference split.
Coach Aaron Mullens' club couldn't slow the visiting Mountaineers in the opener as they dropped a 19-2 run rule decision before answering with a 7-4 triumph in the nightcap.
Now 33-5 on the year, the Lady Aggies will return to conference play on the road Thursday with a noon doubleheader at Arkansas State University Mountain Home.
In the opening disaster, Murray State managed just two runs on six hits with both tallies coming in the third inning on
Bradi Harman and
Shaylin Midgley solo homers.
Kennedy Lord posted a pair of singles,
Gracie Lute had a double with
Courtney Grey and
Lexi Meadows chipping in a single apiece.
Game two was back to form for the Lady Aggies, although they spotted Eastern a 2-0 edge in the third stanza. The Lady Aggies got one of those back on a
Karsyn York solo blast in the bottom of the frame and then erupted for four runs in the fourth to take command.
Midgley slapped a one-out single, Grey was hit by a pitch and both raced home on Lute's powerful double to left.
Mattie Richardson also contributed a two-run homer.
The Lady Aggies added to the cushion when Richardson blasted her second home run of the game in the sixth inning, plating a pair.
Richardson, York and Midgley all had two hits with Meadows, Harman, Grey and Lute ending with one.
Grey fired a seven-inning complete game in the pitching circle, yielding four runs on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
