TONKAWA, Okla – Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa raced to an 11-0 lead after five innings and Murray State could never recover in a 14-4 conference loss on the road Friday afternoon.
The Aggies slipped to 19-19 overall and 5-13 in league play while NOC-Tonkawa improved to 27-15 and 10-9.
Offense was in short supply for Murray State in the opening five innings, managing just three singles while the Mavericks were rolling to the big lead. NOC-Tonkawa plated single runs in the first and second stanzas before blowing things wide open with a seven-run fourth inning. The hosts added two more tallies in the fifth.
The Aggies finally found a scoring flurry in the sixth thanks to four consecutive extra base hits.
Austin Haley doubled with one out before back-to-back home runs from
Wilbert Espinal and
Andrew Tinsley.
Ethan Rone followed with a double and came around to score on a ground out by
Jaxon Gless to narrow the gap to 11-4.
That's as close as Murray State came however with the Mavericks notching three in the seventh to end it early.
Tinsley posted two hits to lead the Aggie offense with
Gage Gilchrist, Haley, Espinal, Rone and Gless ending with one apiece.
Southpaw
Brody Roe was tagged with the pitching loss, yielding six earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks in three and two-third innings.
Cooper Ewing,
Kyle Holzer and
Ryan Dugas all contributed relief work as well in the seven-inning contest.
The two teams will match up again for a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m. in Tonkawa.
