Bats go cold as Murray drops pair to Western

After erupting for six hits in the first three innings Saturday, the Murray State offense went cold the rest of the day as they dropped a pair of baseball matchups to Western Oklahoma State College at The Ranch.

Western scored the final seven runs in the opener to claim a 7-3 win before taking the early conference series with a 4-1 triumph in the rubber match as the Pioneers improved to 13-6.

Coach Sam Bjorling's club fell to 12-8 overall but will continue its month-long homestand on Tuesday with a 2 p.m. non-conference nine inning tilt with Seminole State College.

Fresh off a win in Friday's series opener, things looked promising for the Aggies in the first matchup Saturday as they plated one run in each of the first three stanzas to claim a 3-0 advantage.

Singles by Gage Gilchrist and Andrew Tinsley helped account for the initial run while Brennan Morgan had the other two runs batted in with a solo home run leading off the second inning and a RBI single with two outs in the third.

Murray State's bats went quiet after that with an Ethan Rone double in the sixth being the only other Aggie hit the remainder of the contest.

The Pioneers picked up single runs in the fourth and fifth to narrow the gap before a four-run sixth put the visitors ahead to stay. Three walks, a passed ball and home run fueled the pivotal frame.

Morgan notched two hits with Gilchrist, Tinsley, Rone, Trevin Pettigrew and Ty Chaddrick adding one apiece.

Cash Kuiper tossed five solid frames on the mound, yielding two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Roquemore was charged with the loss in allowing two runs in one-third of an inning. Jakob Holzer fired the final one and two-third frames, yielding three runs on two hits.

The Aggie offensive dry spell carried over to the second contest as well with Tinsley's second inning single the only hit until the seventh. Morgan and Pettigrew singled to start that stanza but outs on the base paths thwarted that scoring opportunity.

Gilchrist smacked a leadoff home run in the eighth for Murray State's lone tally of the game.

Jakob Blackwell twirled five innings, scattering three runs on nine hits and struck out five but absorbed the pitching loss. Kyle Holzer worked three frames, allowing a run on three hits with Ryan Dugas tossing a scoreless final stanza.
