Lady Aggies smash SAU-Tech for sweep

Any luck on St. Patrick's Day proved to be on Murray State's side as the Lady Aggies romped to a league doubleheader sweep of Southern Arkansas Tech on Sunday afternoon in Tishomingo.

It was all Murray State as the bats erupted for 40 runs on 28 hits in the two contests while cruising to 22-1 and 18-2 victories against the Lady Rockets. Sophomore Shaylin Midgley fueled the offensive charge with a whopping 12 runs batted in on the day, smacking a pair of home runs as well as a double.

The fifth-ranked Lady Aggies close out the pre-Spring Break portion of the schedule with a spectacular 28-4 record and a perfect 6-0 in conference action. They'll have a 10-day break before returning to action on Thursday, March 28 when Murray State hosts the University of Arkansas Rich Mountain.

Coach Aaron Mullens' club wasted little time in taking command in the opener, plating a pair of first inning runs after a Karsyn York single and back-to-back SAU Tech errors. The second stanza however put away any doubt to the finish as Murray State sent 18 hitters to the plate and powered across 15 runs.

Midgley notched a single that drove in two early in the frame before capping the scoring barrage with a grand slam over the leftfield fence. Gracie Lute also contributed a pair of hits.

Three more runs came across in the third inning following a Kennedy Lord double and York single.

York paced the offense with three hits, three runs scored and drove in two. Midgley ended the contest with two hits and seven batted in with Lute and Lord chipping in two hits apiece.

Lexi Meadows, Bradi Harman, Haili Igou, Courtney Grey and Brynn Surmont each pitched in one hit.

Grey also recorded the pitching triumph, tossing three scoreless frames in which she yielded four hits and struck out four. Bree Butler yielded one unearned run on no hits in two innings of work.

Game two was virtually over from the start although the Lady Aggies allowed an opening run to spot the Lady Rockets a 1-0 advantage. They responded with seven in the bottom of the stanza to take command with a three-run double off the bat of Midgley serving as the key blow. Meadows, Grey, Lute and Lord all had hits for Murray State.

SAU Tech scratched across another solo tally in the third inning but the hosts had the answer with four of their own while putting together a two-out flurry. Mattie Richardson and Meadows each had hits while they capitalized on four walks and a Lady Rocket error.

A seven-run fourth inning burst helped Murray State once again put it away on the run rule. Midgley belted her second homer of the day to leadoff the frame while Richardson added a two-run homer and York and Meadows tossed in doubles with Igou driving in a pair with a triple.

Meadows and Midgley wrapped up with three hits apiece, knocking in two and five runs respectively. Igou and Richardson tossed in two each while York, Grey, Lute and Lord all tallied one hit.

Dara Hamlin earned the pitching win, scattering two runs on four hits over three innings. Brooklyn Ellis twirled the final two no-hit innings, fanning a pair.
