ENID, Okla – Freshman
Austin Haley belted his fifth home run of the season, but that proved to be all the scoring Murray State could muster in a 6-1 conference baseball loss at Northern Oklahoma College-Enid on Friday evening.
The Aggies finished with a 6-5 edge in hits but six free passes ended up being costly as they dropped to 15-12 overall and 1-6 in league play. NOC-Enid improved to 20-6 with its 11
th straight victory with the Jets now 7-0 and alone atop the conference standings.
Things got off to a rocky start for Murray State as ace lefty
Brody Roe struggled with his control early on, issuing five straight free passes (two walks, three hit batsmen) to start the game. The Aggies finally got an out on a groundout that made it 3-0 Jets before the southpaw worked out of any further damage.
Haley smacked a leadoff solo home run over the rightfield wall in the second frame to narrow the gap but the Aggies could never put together more than one hit in any frame. NOC-Enid pitching also yielded just two free passes over the entire nine innings.
The Jets tacked on single tallies in the fifth, sixth and eighth frame with the only other Murray State extra base hit coming on a
Brennan Morgan double to start the ninth.
Roe was solid after settling in following the rocky start, tossing six frames in which he allowed only two hits but was saddled with the mound loss.
Kyle Holzer added two stanzas of relief, allowing one run on three hits.
Morgan accounted for two of the Murray State hits as Haley,
Wilbert Espinal,
Jaxon Gless and
Ty Chaddrick added one apiece.
The two teams are slated to wrap up the three-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at David Allen Ballpark in Enid.
