Murray State Sports Information
After blanking Northeast Texas Community College in Wednesday's opening contest the Murray State Aggies needed a late rally in the nightcap for a baseball sweep at The Ranch to begin a 17-game homestand.
The Aggies cruised to a 10-0 triumph in the first game before exploding for six runs in the seventh stanza for a 12-9 victory to improve to 7-6 on the season.
Improving to 7-6 on the season, Murray State will be back home Friday for a three-game weekend series against Arkansas State University-Three Rivers starting at 4 p.m. Northeast Texas fell to 10-6 on the year with the doubleheader loss.
Kaleb Melvin got the start in game one and was solid in four and a third innings for the pitching win, yielding only one hit with four strikeouts and five walks.
Kyle Holzer recorded the final two outs of the run rule victory that lasted just five frames.
The Aggies broke a scoreless deadlock with three runs in the second stanza as
Brennan Morgan,
Jaxon Gless,
Ty Chaddrick and
Gage Gilchrist all provided consecutive singles.
They added three more tallies in the fourth inning, spurred by doubles from Chaddrick and
Austin Haley. A four-run fifth helped put things away as
Ethan Rone began the flurry with a triple to left. Morgan tossed in an RBI single, Gilchrist blasted a run-scoring double and
Wilbert Espinal chipped in another RBI single.
Gilchrist, Haley, Rone, Morgan and Chaddrick all had two hits in the Murray State offensive assault. Espinal and Gless both ended with one hit.
Andrew Tinsley had a monster performance at the plate in game two, smacking three doubles and drove in five to fuel the offensive charge. One of those doubles came in a pivotal seventh inning and plated three runs to break an 8-8 deadlock.
Morgan opened the decisive frame with a double while a walk and sacrifice bunt advanced runners for a Gilchrist double that tied the score. Haley coaxed a walk and
Trace Necessary reached on a two-out error ahead of Tinsley's back-breaking hit.
Murray began the scoring with two in the first inning thanks to three walks and singles from Espinal and Necessary. Haley's sacrifice fly in the second made it 3-0 before Northeast put together its first offensive flurry of the day, plating six in the third.
The Aggies answered with a pair in its half of the frame with Necessary's solo home run while Tinsley doubled and scored on a Chaddrick sac fly. One inning later it was Tinsley's two-out double that pushed across Espinal to knot the score again at 6-6.
In total, Murray State belted out 16 hits to just eight for visitors as Espinal equaled Tinsley with three hits. Haley, Necessary, Morgan and Chaddrick all tallied two hits with Gilchrist and Rone notching one apiece.
Four Murray State pitchers combined for nine innings, with
Ryan Dugas yielding no earned runs on one hit in two frames and
Nathan Darden adding innings to close it out. He allowed one run on one hit and fanned four.
