PLANO, Texas – Murray State led from start to finish and put on another defensive clinic Wednesday night for a 70-56 road victory over Collin County College in non-conference men's basketball action.
The Aggies held the Cougars to a season-low scoring total with a stifling effort that upped their season record to 9-2 and ran their current winning streak to five straight. Collin County, whose previous low scoring mark for the season had been 63 points, fell to 7-6 on the year.
Murray State set the tone early with an
RJ Chatman three pointer on the game's opening possession before adding a pair of
Brandon Ivery steals and layups in an initial 16-2 flurry that put them in control.
Davis' squad led 40-24 at halftime before watching the hosts close to within 47-41 just eight minutes into the second half. The Aggies had the answer spurred by
Abeeng Agot, who got free for a layup and then a thunderous dunk that sparked a 16-3 scoring blitz that put the contest completely out of reach.
Ivery, who notched a season-high 27 points in an earlier win over Collin, gave the Cougars fits again with a game-high 24 that included 10 of 23 shooting from the field.
Elijah Tshibangu tallied 12 with Chatman adding 10, and
Bol Agu and
Chanon Frye hitting eight apiece. Agot had six points and
Ignas Juskevicius tossed in two.
Murray State will be back on the road Saturday looking to avenge one of their two losses at Southwestern Christian College for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
"I thought the guys played inspired defense tonight," head coach Josh Davis commented. "I was very happy for them, and it was just awesome to watch. We got off to an outstanding start offensively but stalled a little when they went to zone in the second half. We got it going though and Abeeng provided a huge spark for us off the bench.
"We felt this game had huge implications for the rest of the year and we keep putting ourselves in place to do special things. We definitely don't need much motivation for the next game against Southwestern Christian. Hopefully we go in breathing fire this time."
