DENISON, Texas – Despite some offensive struggles throughout Saturday's road contest at Grayson County College, the Murray State Aggies made the shots when they had to, forcing overtime before pulling out a 70-65 victory.
The Aggies improved to 7-2 with their third consecutive win and will wind up the pre-Thanksgiving portion of the schedule at Hill College on Tuesday, bidding for a season sweep of the Rebels.
"I am super proud that we weathered the big offensive drought in the second half," head coach Josh Davis said afterward. "It's the first time we have won at Grayson in my three years here. I'm glad for our guys we could pull it out. We switched to zone to slow them down and allow us to eventually hit a few buckets to tie it and force overtime. We were able to get the momentum in overtime and were able to finish."
Scoring the game's opening nine points it looked like Murray State could be heading for an easy road victory over the Vikings as they held a 9-0 edge when things turned in a hurry. The Aggies went ice cold from the field while Grayson was heating up.
Davis' club managed to stem the tide a bit, still carrying the 37-32 lead at intermission. The hosts however opened the second half on a 15-2 flurry with
RJ Chatman's jumper the only Murray State points before a
Chanon Frye free throw with 14 minutes remaining.
It was still a 55-48 Grayson lead with 7:10 to play when the Aggies went to a zone defense and totally put the clamps on the Vikings, holding the hosts scoreless until the 1:33 mark. And although it wasn't pretty offensively, Murray State slowly clawed its way back spurred by sophomore
Bol Agu, who returned to the lineup after missing action earlier in the week with an injury.
Agu's conventional three-point play narrowed the gap to two and
Abeeng Agot's trey with 1:15 remaining cut the margin to just one. They never got even though until Agu's two charity tosses with 3.8 seconds to tie it and force the extra frame.

In the overtime period, Agu scored the first four Murray State points and
Elijah Tshibangu connected on five free throws to ice the come from behind win.
Agu was the offensive catalyst late pouring in 17 points, pacing four Aggies in double figures. Chatman and
Rustin Coffey ended with 12 apiece while Tshibangu notched 10.
Murray State also got eight from Agot with
Ignas Juskevicius pitching in six. Frye added three and
Isaac Jones had two points.
"Bol is an incredible scorer for us, and it was nice to have him back in the lineup," Davis said of his big man, who is the team's leading scorer for the season. "He's tough to stop and once you foul him he's really good at the free throw line for a big guy."
