Bol Agu pumped in a season-high 24 points to spur six Aggies in double figures as Murray State outlasted visiting Dallas College-Mountain View, 93-84, Monday night at Beames Fieldhouse.
The 6-foot-8 Agu had a monster second half around the paint with 19 of his total after the break and was a key factor in holding the hot-shooting Lions at bay.
Coach Josh Davis' club improved to 3-1 on the season and will face another stiff test Wednesday when they face Hill College at 7:30 p.m. in the third contest of a five-game homestand.
"We had a size advantage and went to it in the second half and Bol converted a lot of opportunities," Davis stated. "We spread the scoring around a lot tonight and it was good to see. We got into the bench early and would have liked to have played even more guys, but Mountain View was presenting problems, and we never could really distance ourselves.
"We are going to have to refocus and play better Wednesday night against a really good Hill squad. We've got to get back to being a tough-nosed defensive team."
Murray State built as much as a 15-point lead on a couple of occasions throughout the first half behind showings from
Ignas Juskevicius and
Elijah Tshibangu as the duo combined for 18 points prior to the break.
Mountain View put together a late run however to narrow the gap to 39-29 at intermission.
The Lions got within four early in the second half before
Brandon Ivery's three pointer stemmed the tide. Each time the Aggies pushed the margin to double figures and looked to be pulling away however, the visitors answered right back as the advantage fluctuated between eight and 12 points the rest of the way.
Agu was the workhorse inside with the game-high scoring total, but
RJ Chatman had a solid effort at the point with 14 points as well as dishing out six assists.
Ivery pitched in all 11 of his points after halftime with Juskevicius, Tshibangu and
Rustin Coffey all tallying 10 points.
Devon MacCollister contributed six,
Abeeng Agot had four,
Kobe Harrison notched three and
Chanon Frye scored one.
