Murray softball blasts SAU Tech

Box Score By Kevin Farr
Murray State Sports Information

Jadyn Hook homered twice and Abby Beck drove in five runs to power Murray State to a 16-3 softball win over visiting Southern Arkansas Tech on Wednesday to complete a conference sweep.

The top-ranked Lady Aggies were 9-0 victors in the opener as Alexa Hopkins fired a one-hit shutout and recorded 14 of the 15 outs by strikeout in the run-rule five inning affair.

Now 34-0 on the season, Murray State will be quickly back in action on Thursday, hosting University of Arkansas Rich Mountain for a 1 p.m. twinbill.

Although they didn't score in the first inning of game one, that proved to be the lone frame all day in which the Lady Aggies did not manage at least one run. Coach Aaron Mullens' club responded with two tallies in the second, five in the third and two more in the fourth to pull away on the strength of eight hits.

In the second, Kenzie Tuck singled and Rayna Rock doubled before an RBI hit from Hook to take the lead. Tuck added a two-run homer one stanza later and Chesnie Hewitt also knocked in a pair with a double. Rock's run-scoring double fueled the final burst in the fourth.

Rock belted three hits, including the two doubles, to lead the Murray State offensive charge. Tuck and Hewitt each tallied two hits and two RBI.

After spotting SAU Tech a 1-0 edge in the first, the Lady Aggies quickly answered with 15 consecutive runs over the next three at bats to put it completely out of reach.

Beck drove in the first two runs of the game for Murray State with a single that gave them the lead for good. K.J. Morgan, Shallen Mershon and Beck all strung together RBI hits in the second to push the advantage to 5-1.

That only set the stage for a monster 10-run third which saw Brylea Russell and Hook blast back-to-back solo homers to begin the inning. Hewitt tripled in another run and Beck tripled for two more just three batters later. Hook capped the huge frame with her second home run – a three-run blast to centerfield.

Ileana Lucio worked four innings in the pitching circle, yielding three runs on four hits with five strikeouts to pick up the win.

Beck ended with three hits, Hook, Tuck, Hewitt, Morgan, Mershon and Emma Damato all pitched in two hits. Morgan Skold also smacked a home run that wrapped up the scoring in the fourth inning.
