Murray State Sports Information
Dominant pitching was the story for Murray State on Thursday afternoon as the Aggies allowed just six hits in a doubleheader sweep at Redlands Community College.
The Aggies got a stellar 1-hit pitching performance from ace
Colby Langford in an 11-1 opening triumph and then followed with a 7-0 victory in game two as they improved to 33-13 overall and 17-9 in league play. They'll close out the four-game conference series with Redlands at home on Saturday with a 1 p.m. twinbill.
Langford was exceptional in six shutout innings on the mound, yielding a single hit to go along with 13 strikeouts.
Murray State broke a scoreless battle in the second frame with a single tally as
Trace Necessary singled and eventually came around on a
Jaxon Gless RBI hit. A five-run fourth inning pretty much put the triumph on ice for the Aggies with
Ashton Inman, Gless and
Brady Benedict stringing together second run-scoring doubles. Two batters later
Gage Gilchrist tossed in another double that drove in two.
The Aggie offense plated three more runs in the sixth fueled by a Necessary two-run triple. Benedict also doubled in the seventh, eventually coming around to score on a
Garrett Gruell single.
Coach
Sam Bjorling's squad posted 12 hits with three apiece coming from Benedict and Necessary. Gless had two hits with
Clay Jung, Gruell, Gilchrist and Inman all contributing one.
Game two produced a sensational start by
Dylan Hill, who covered seven strong innings while scattering four hits as well as striking out five.
Nathan Darden chipped in two frames of one-hit scoreless relief as well as getting a pair of strikeouts.
Murray State's offense broke things open in the second inning, plating three runs as McCullough, Inman, Gless and Benedict all singled in order to start the stanza. Gruell had the final RBI on a sacrifice fly.
The Aggies tacked on another run in the fourth with a Jung RBI single. Three more runs in the eighth ended any hope at a Cougar comeback. Inman and Gless each singled and Benedict tossed in an RBI double.
Inman, Gless and Benedict all had two hits as Jung, Gilchrist,
Wilbert Espinal and McCullough notched one apiece.
