The Murray State Aggies rode another patented second half comeback to erase a 12-point deficit but saw their season come to a heart-breaking, stunning conclusion Wednesday night in Muskogee.
Sophomore guard
Daylon Andrews sank a desperation heave from just inside halfcourt as the horn sounded to help top-seeded Northern Oklahoma-Enid survive the Murray upset bid in a 68-65 decision in the opening round of the conference tournament. The Aggies end the season with a 12-19 record under first-year head coach Josh Davis.
"Our guys fought hard," Davis said afterward. "I am extremely proud of them."
NOC-Enid came out of the gate smoking hot from the field, connecting for nine first half three-pointers to build a 38-26 edge at intermission and had the Aggies on the ropes. The Jets finished the game with 16 treys.
Murray State sprang off the canvas after the break fueled by a monster effort from 6-foot-4 freshman
Kyle Tolbert, who poured in 16 points in the final 20 minutes, on the way to a season-best 18 points.
The Aggies pumped in 39 second half points as a unit, rallying to even the score at 65 in the final minute and even had a chance at the lead before coming away empty with just under 10 seconds to play. Murray's defense forced Andrews to retreat to near half court before the last-second prayer found nothing but net.
In addition to Tolbert's performance, the Aggies had two others in double figures as
Kameron Johnson tallied 12 points and
Freddie Cooper had 10. K.J. Boone was just shy of that mark with eight points, A.J. Richard scored six,
Cordrayius Graham tossed in five, T.J. Gardner had four while
Ridley Shema contributed two.
