Murray State Sports Information
After running away with a 9-0 triumph in the opener, Murray State was in a dogfight through three frames in game two before pulling away for a 9-1 win at Eastern State College Tuesday afternoon to complete a softball sweep.
With the wins, the top-ranked Lady Aggies improved to 24-0 on the season and will return home Friday to face Southern Arkansas University Tech for a noon conference twinbill.
It was all Murray State in Tuesday's first contest as the Lady Aggies exploded for seven runs in the first stanza, which proved to be plenty of cushion for starting pitcher
Christina Clark. The freshman hurler scattered three hits over four innings and struck out three to up her record to a nation-best 14-0.
Karsyn York set the tone immediately with a first inning lead off home run to centerfield and the slugging Murray offense just poured it on from there.
K.J. Morgan singled in front of a pair of free passes before a
Kenzie Tuck two-run single.
Rayna Rock's sacrifice fly drove in another and
Chesnie Hewitt cleared the bases with a three-run blast to left.
Jadyn Hook singled with two outs and came around to score when York reached on an Eastern error while batting for the second time in the frame.
A Rock two-run homer in the second frame capped the scoring as the Lady Aggies seemingly cruised the rest of the way for the run rule. York and Tuck each tallied two hits while Rock and Hewitt drove in three apiece.
Game two had a bit more drama as it was a 1-1 deadlock through three stanzas, when Murray State really began to take over, scoring twice in the fourth and fifth before wrapping it up with four runs in the sixth.
Rock and Hewitt singled to ignite the fourth-inning spree as each scored on a
Brylea Russell double. Morgan fueled another two-run push in the fifth by belting a solo homer with Hewitt coaxing a bases-loaded walk to force in the other run.
All four Murray State runs to put the game away in the sixth came with two outs. Morgan bunted for a hit and was followed by
Shallen Mershon's two-run homer over the leftfield wall. Singles by
Abby Beck, Tuck and Rock followed and Hewitt knocked in the other pair with a hit to center field.
The Lady Aggies racked up 13 hits, topped by three from Morgan. Tuck, Rock, Hewitt and Russell all tallied two hits with Hewitt and Russell driving in three apiece as well.
Alexa Hopkins twirled scoreless four innings in the pitching circle, recording the win as she allowed just one hit and fanned two batters.
