Murray State Sports Information
Top-ranked Murray State broke a 3-3 deadlock in the fifth inning of game two Saturday afternoon as they wrapped up a pair of wins over Coffeyville Community College from Kansas to improve 26-0 on the season.
The Lady Aggies got another dominant pitching effort in a 6-0 triumph in the opener and then came alive late to continue their winning ways in a 7-4 decision. They will have a week of game rest during Spring Break before going back on the road next weekend for a four-game set at North Arkansas College.
Freshman
Christina Clark continued to roll in the circle during her debut season as she worked four innings and gave up only one hit and struck out nine.
Alexa Hopkins fired the final three stanzas for the save as she also yielded just one hit and fanned four.
A pair of three-run scoring outbursts did the damage for Murray State with the first coming in the fourth inning, stoked by a
Chesnie Hewitt three-run homer that also scored
Shallen Mershon and
Abby Beck after leading off the frame with walks.
Three more tallies in the sixth helped put the game on ice as Beck doubled in one and
Rayna Rock chipped in a two-run homer for the other two. Beck was the only Lady Aggie to finish with two hits.
Murray State plated single runs in each of the first three frames of the second contest behind a solid start from
Ileana Lucio, who scattered three hits and notched a whopping 10 strikeouts in four innings. The Lady Aggies however watched Coffeyville respond with three of its own in the fifth to tie the game.
That deadlock was short-lived to say the least as the Lady Aggies got a Mershon double, Beck triple and
Kenzie Tuck double to open its half of the frame. Hewitt had a sacrifice fly to plate the final run of the stanza.
A Coffeyville error aided another Murray State run in the sixth but the visitors got a couple of hits and one run in the seventh before Hopkins slammed the door with a strikeout to end the game.
The Lady Aggies had 11 hits in that contest with Tuck, Beck, Mershon, K.J. Morgan and
Karsyn York all posted two each.
