Garrett Gruell slammed a pair of home runs and drove in seven to spark the Murray State Aggies baseballers to a 10-6 road victory over Seminole State Saturday afternoon.
Gruell smashed a three-run homer in the fifth inning to erase a 2-1 Seminole advantage and then a grand slam to highlight a six-run sixth frame that put the Aggies ahead to stay. The freshman All-American now has five bombs in the squad's first three games of the year.
Murray State scored a second inning run to tie the game early as
Patrick McCullough tripled and scored on a
Wilbert Espinal ground out.
Trailing 6-4 going to the sixth, the Aggies got RBI bases loaded walks from
Brady Benedict and
Gage Gilchrist to knot the score before Gruell stepped to the plate and left any doubt with a blast over the leftfield wall.
That was all the run support reliever
Will Ellis needed, settling in to shutout the Trojans in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings for the victory before
Tyler Zylstra struck out three in the ninth to wrap things up.
Gruell's two home runs and the triple and single by McCullough proved to be Murray State's only hits of the nine-inning contest but proved enough as Seminole State pitchers walked 10.
Ellis, Zylstra and starting pitcher
Colby Langford combined to scatter eight hits to the Trojans, but struck out 16 and walked only three as the Aggies improved to 3-0 on the season.
The Aggies will be back home at The Ranch for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday with Brookhaven College.
