Murray State Sports Information
Pitching was dominant once again and the Murray State Lady Aggies utilized a workman-like performance at the plate to throttle Metropolitan College for a softball sweep in Tishomingo on Saturday.
Coach Aaron Mullens' club erupted to a 14-1 triumph in the opener and then finished off an 8-0 whitewashing in game two for another run rule. The second-ranked Lady Aggies are now 16-0 on the season and will host Northern Oklahoma College-Enid in the conference opening twinbill at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Murray State wasted little time offensively in the first inning of game one, plating a pair of runs spurred by a ringing double from K.J. Morgan. After watching Metro cut the margin in half in the second inning, the Lady Aggies exploded for eight runs while sending 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the frame to take complete control.
Chesnie Hewitt, Morgan and
Abby Beck all homered in the stanza with
Rayna Rock also contributing a pair of doubles. A four-run third inning was highlighted by a Morgan double,
Kenzie Tuck home run and Rock's third hit of the game as the onslaught continued. Morgan also tallied three hits with Tuck driving in three and Hewitt,
Shallen Mershon and Beck all with two RBI and one hit.
That was easily more than enough support for
Christina Clark, who tossed four innings while allowing one run on three hits and struck out three for pitching triumph.
Alexa Hopkins notched an inning of perfect relief and two strikeouts.
It was the pitching of
Ileana Lucio and Hopkins that turned the trick in the second contest as they combined on a one-hit shutout. Lucio fanned five in four innings and added another win in the circle.
The game was scoreless until the fourth when the Lady Aggies put on a double frenzy for seven runs in taking command.
Mershon doubled and scored on a Beck two-bagger to break the ice.
Jadyn Hook contributed another double along with three RBI and
Karsyn York followed suit with another to drive in a run during the barrage. Another Tuck home run in the fifth wrapped up the scoring for the Lady Aggies.
Tuck posted two hits while Morgan, Mershon, Beck, Rock, Hook and York all added one.
