Murray softball takes pair from Seward County

Early and late scoring barrages proved to be decisive for the second-ranked Murray State softball team as the Lady Aggies notched a doubleheader sweep of Seward County on Saturday.

Murray State jumped in front in the opening stanza on the way to a 9-1 run-rule triumph in the first game and then plated five runs in the sixth inning to break a deadlock in the nightcap for a 6-1 victory. While remaining unbeaten at 12-0 on the season, Coach Aaron Mullens' club set up a highly anticipated showdown at Grayson County College on Monday at 4 p.m.

The Lady Aggies finished with a 9-2 hit edge in game one, erasing a 1-0 deficit while scoring nine unanswered runs.

Abby Beck and Rayna Rock each contributed RBI doubles in the opening frame uprising with Karsyn York also blasting a three-run homer. Murray State tacked on three in the bottom of the third with Rock and Jadyn Hook providing run-scoring doubles and York the final RBI on a groundout.

That was plenty of run support for Christina Clark, who tossed four innings for the pitching win, yielding one run on two hits with three strikeouts. Alexa Hopkins also twirled one frame of scoreless relief.

Rock wrapped up with three hits, including the two doubles, as well as two batted in and two runs scored. York chipped in two hits and four RBI. Shallen Mershon, Beck, Kenzie Tuck and Hook all had one hit.

Game two was a 1-1 deadlock until the sixth when Mershon opened the frame with a solo home run to leftfield. York also tallied a grand slam homer for the final margin, for one of her two hits in the contest.

Tuck led the offensive charge with three hits while Chesnie Hewitt, Mershon and Rock ended with one hit apiece. Ileana Lucio fired four innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits, with Hopkins adding the final three shutout frames for the win, giving up just one hit and struck out four.
