Building as much as a nine-point first half lead, the Murray State Aggies had Collin County College on the ropes in Monday night's upset bid at Bloomer Sullivan Arena in Durant.
Ultimately, however, it was another late heartbreak for the Aggies as the Cougars got a buzzer-beating offensive putback to secure a 66-64 non-conference victory.
Murray State looked like it might have enough to get the win after a
Stanley Harley layup following a
Tarrance Austin steal with 50 seconds remaining.
Down a point with 10.7 seconds left, Harley sank one of two charity tosses to tie things at 64. The Aggies thwarted a driving shot attempt by Xavier Williams but T.J. Thomas snuck in for the rebound and tossed one in as time expired for the Collin triumph.
Coach Josh Davis' squad performed its game plan to near perfection, limiting possessions and holding the Cougars, who came in averaging nearly 96 points per contest, to 30 points below that mark.
The Aggies led 32-26 at halftime before Collin County caught fire out of the break. Undeterred, Murray State stayed tough to erase a six-point deficit down the stretch with three pointers from
Rustin Coffey and R.J. Chatman.
Austin proved to be the catalyst with 16 points, sinking three treys, while Chatman ended with 12 points. After missing Saturday's contest due to illness,
Ignas Juskevicius posted a solid game in the paint with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Treyvaughn Williams notched eight as well with seven from Harley, six by Coffey and five from
Isaiah Lewis.
Emery Eberhard tossed in two.
Now 5-7 on the season, Murray State will be off until Saturday when the Aggies will be back home for a 4 p.m. outing with Grayson County College.
