Foul trouble and cold three-point shooting down the stretch proved costly for the Murray State Aggies as a late rally fell short in a 77-75 loss to visiting Arkansas-Cossatot Saturday afternoon inside Beames Fieldhouse.
A pair of Aggie starters fouled out in the second half and Murray State couldn't find the range on its final seven trey attempts while seeing its record slip to 5-6 on the year.
The visiting Colts utilized a 7-0 flurry to break a 65-all deadlock in the final five minutes but Coach Josh Davis' squad would not fold thanks to big plays from sophomores
Stanley Harley and
Treyvaughn Williams.
Harley hit two free throws and also notched a steal before feeding Dayvanta Campbell for a dunk in less than a 40 second span to help narrow the gap to just two points. Williams then sank five straight free throws that finally put the Aggies in front 75=74 with 28 seconds remaining.
Despite struggling at the charity stripe throughout the second half, Cossatot managed to get a pair to fall with 12 seconds left to claim the lead for good.
Murray State then committed a costly turnover and Harley's running 35-foot prayer at the buzzer bounced away to preserve the Colts' victory.
The Aggies built a seven-point advantage in the game's opening 10 minutes, leading 21-14, but a lengthy offensive dry spell allowed the visitors to erase the deficit and eventually carry a 37-34 edge to intermission.
Davis' squad battled back and forth with the Colts throughout the second half, snagging a 60-55 lead on a R.J. Chatman three pointer with 8:23 remaining. That proved to be the Aggies' final successful trey of the game as they went ice cold from beyond the arc.
Harley finished with a team-high 23 points while Williams posted a season-best 15, including 13 points in the second half.
Isaiah Lewis finished with nine,
Emery Eberhard had eight, Chatman scored seven, Campbell notched five while
